As Miss Gunnison Valley 2013 I commit to better our community. This is how I plan to do it.
When we were infants we needed to be nurtured and taken care of by somebody else. We were helpless, but because of the love of our parents, we had the motivation and the desire to keep learning and growing. We are finally old and strong enough to be independent, and we keep growing and keep getting stronger. One day we hit our limit and slowly we start to reverse. As we get to an older age we start becoming weaker. We may obtain a disease or a disability that rushes this withering process.
Then all of a sudden we find ourselves in the same position we were in when we first came into this life:
weak, helpless, and in need of care.
It is miss understood a lot of the time that care centers for the elderly are like orphanages for children.
Somewhere their family just dumped them.
It is also perceived that care centers are nut houses for the elderly.
The elderly are just seen as old, slow and scary.
Who makes these assumptions and stereotypes?
The Youth.
Why?
Because they uneducated on this subject.
Our youth is the generation that will be the nurses, doctors, orderlies, and volunteers that take care of their parents and grandparents when they are older.
Our youth need to know the reality of these elderly people.
That they were once young and vibrant!
They are human!
They have lived a full life and we are going to be just like them one day.
Youth today are losing compassion and communication skills.
Visiting the elderly and being Valley involved with them can literally help them learn from the past and gain these essential skills.
Our valley needs to realize that hospital beds, medicines, and programs from our government are essential to our elderly in care centers, but that youth can give love and recognition by visiting these elderly.
This is a small act that has a huge effect on not only the elderly, but the community and county.
The elderly will become more apart of county’s importance and our youth’s character grow by helping their local care center residents.
I have created my own colored logo, for care center residents, with my own motto.
Through this blog Gunnison Valley will be able to be involved with the different activities, personal experiences can be shared, and ways to volunteer will be offered.
I have chosen the colors green and silver to represent the care centers. Green is the meaning of life and a new beginning. Silver is usually an accent color, it needs assistance to give its full effect. Together both of these colors represent the youth reaching out to help and aide our elderly.
My motto is
“You are the Center of Care”
As my logo makes a circle it is obvious that the center of it is an individual, because people who don’t have to be there have the most effect.
That is why I will educate the youth by visiting all of the schools and spreading my awareness. Having the chance to educate youth on why they should visit their local care center will include presentations, videos, and personal stories.
Youth will have the opportunity to become more involved with their local care centers as awarenesses and service projects will offered.
Youth groups: choirs, athletes, student government, and clubs of all kinds will have many appointments to visit the elderly in their local care centers. Young children will be given the opportunity to draw pictures and make cards for the elderly. Simple awarenesses, like wearing pink for the fight against breast cancer to support those victims in their care center, will be active.
